DHS Chief: Marijuana is Not a Factor in the Drug War

Despite favorable state-wide election results, concerns among cannabis investors have increased following recent commentary from the newly appointed Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

So far, the White House administration has not provided much assurance to legal cannabis businesses and this has increased the level of uncertainty when it comes to the fate of the United States cannabis industry.

Cannabis investors, entrepreneurs, and advocates, however, may be able to breathe a sigh of relief after Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly appeared as a special guest on NBC’s Meet The Press.

During the program, Kelly addressed the current war on drugs and said that cannabis is “not a factor” in the United States’ current fight against narcotics. This is very different from Attorney General Sessions who recently said that the dependency for cannabis is only slightly less awful than heroin.

Cannabis is not the Problem

Kelly said the United States needs to focus on preventing more serious drugs like cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin from coming in the country via the Mexican border.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly said, “The solution is a comprehensive drug demand reduction program in the United States that involves every man and woman of goodwill. And then rehabilitation. And then law enforcement. And then getting at the poppy fields and the coca fields in the south.”

Kelly further added, “Yeah, marijuana is not a factor in the drug war. It’s three things. Methamphetamine. Almost all produced in Mexico. Heroin. Virtually all produced in Mexico. And cocaine that comes up from further south.”

What to Expect from Here?

Although Attorney General Sessions has raised the fear level within the cannabis industry, we believe these fears are overdone. The domestic cannabis industry is a multi-billion-dollar industry that employees hundreds of thousands of people.

The United States is in too much debt to try and shut down an industry that continues to be the fastest growing industry in the world. We remain favorable on the opportunities within the domestic cannabis industry and continue to track several investment opportunities available today!
