Everyone’s favorite southern gentleman is back in the spotlight this week…
This time, Mr. Sessions has personally reached out to Congress requesting that they undo the federal medical marijuana protection laws that have kept the industry out of the DOJ’s crosshairs since 2014.
The letter has surfaced after being made public on Monday and the language that good ole’ Jeff is using is quite startling. In the letter Sessions states:
I believe it would be unwise for Congress to restrict the discretion of the Department to fund particular prosecutions, particularly in the midst of an historic drug epidemic and potentially long-term uptick in violent crime. The Department must be in a position to use all laws available to combat the transnational drug organizations and dangerous drug traffickers who threaten American lives.
We hope that Sessions’ reference to an historic drug epidemic is focused on the deadly opioid crisis currently plaguing the United States.
Some have said that Sessions’ formal letter to Congress is just a scare tactic to influence members to overhaul the Rohrbacher-Farr Amendment, which has significant bipartisan support in congress.
In today’s world, it is tough find anything that has bipartisan support so I am not sure why the Attorney General wants to go after one of the few issues that congress still agrees on. Marijuana is a medicine and it is time to start treating it like one.
The fact of the matter is that the cannabis train has left the station and the industry has too much momentum to be stopped at this point. Countries around the world continue to legalize this miracle plant and it is time for the United States to recognize a new revenue stream and work to improve our economy and the health of our fellow citizens.
