In honor of President’s Day we want to discuss the top 5 pro-cannabis presidents.

The history of cannabis dates back thousands of years. Archaeologists found cannabis seeds inside Siberian burial mounds from 3000 B.C. Thousands of years ago, the Chinese used cannabis as a medicine. Cannabis even found its way toColonial America as George Washington grew hemp at his house on Mount Vernon.

Before marijuana prohibition began in the late 1930′s, many people, including some of our nation’s leaders grew and used cannabis for a variety of reasons.

It’s well known that cannabis has thousands of industrial and therapeutics uses, and has been grown for thousands of years. Therefore, it is not surprising that many would-be U.S Presidents enjoyed it for recreational and medicinal uses.

1) Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson was an American Founding Father, the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, and the third President of the United States. Jefferson was a spokesman for democracy and grew cannabis on his plantationand smuggled Chinese hemp seeds to America. He also is believed to have given special smoking blends out as personal gifts which is why he tops our list of pro-marijuana U.S presidents.

2) John F. Kennedy

John F. Kennedy is considered to be one of the best presidents in the history of the United States. Close acquaintances of the former president said that he regularly used cannabis to ease his back pain. His acquaintances also said that Kennedy would use cannabis while he was in office and planned on legalizing marijuana during his second term.

3) Barack Obama

Barack Obama has been one of the most influential presidents when it comes to marijuana reform. During his presidency, Colorado, Washington, Oregon and Alaska legalized marijuana for recreational use. President Obama has been very open with his own marijuana smoking in the past, once saying “I inhaled frequently. That was the point”.

4) Bill Clinton

Bill Clinton was president when California became to first state to legalize medical marijuana. The former president did not flinch when other states followed California and legalized medical marijuana as well. Clinton famously stated that he smoked but “didn’t inhale”. He has been known to bend the truth every now and then, so he still makes the list.

5) George W. Bush

George W. Bush was one of the more entertaining presidents when it comes to marijuana reform, however, when he was in office many states followed the precedent set by California when Bill Clinton was in office. The former president publicly refused to answer the question if he had ever tried using marijuana. Bush was later caught saying that he refused to answer the question “because I don’t want some little kid doing what I tried”.  Bush’s brother, Jeb Bush, who was the former Governor of Florida also admitted to experimenting with marijuana while at a private boarding school in Massachusetts. He said, & quote; I drank alcohol and I smoked marijuana when I was at Andover. It was pretty common.”
